Septic costs: what each job should cost

Planning ranges for every common septic job, computed by the same engine as the calculators, with the assumptions published.

The short answer

A routine pump-out costs $300 – $550 for a 1,000-gallon tank. Most repairs cost $150 to $2,500. A new drain field runs $4,700 – $12,400 for a conventional 3-bedroom field, and a whole new system $6,100 – $15,600 for conventional, up to $11,700 – $28,200 for a mound.

How to compare septic quotes

Ask every contractor to itemise the same way — tank, field, pump, design, permit, site work — and compare line by line, not totals. The big differences between septic quotes are rarely the price of a tank; they're what's been left out (the perc test, the permit, the pump chamber) and whether the job quoted is the job you need.

Costs that often aren't on the first quote

Septic work has a handful of costs that sit outside the installer's price and surprise people at the end: the county's permit and inspection fees, the soil scientist or engineer who does the perc test and design, electrical work for a pump or aerobic unit, restoring the lawn and driveway after the excavator leaves, and abandoning the old tank on a replacement. On a pump-out, the extras are digging to buried lids and locating a tank nobody marked.

None of these is a sign of a bad contractor. They're a sign that the quote needs to say who is responsible for each one, in writing, before work starts.
